get (someone) off

Definition

to escape legal punishment, or to help someone escape legal punishment: She was charged with fraud, but her lawyer got her off. If you get off with a particular punishment, or if someone gets you off, it means that the punishment could have been much more severe: He got off with a suspended sentence of three years for practicing medicine without a license.
