Definition

BANKING the amount of money someone has in a bank account: If the account balance falls below £3,000 the interest rate drops to 1% a year.
ACCOUNTING the amount shown in accounts that is the amount necessary to make the debits (= money spent) and credits (= money received) equal to each other: The only difficult figure in the balance sheet, apart from the profit and loss account balance, is the minority interest.
