Definition

EXAMINE to examine something with a machine that can see inside an object or body: Airports use X-ray machines to scan luggage for weapons.
COMPUTER to use a piece of equipment that copies words or pictures from paper into a computer: to scan photos into a computer
LOOK to look around an area quickly to try to find a person or thing: She scanned the crowd for a familiar face.
READ (also scan through) to quickly read a piece of writing to understand the main meaning or to find a particular piece of information: I scanned the travel brochures looking for a cheap holiday.
