tsunami is once more our most searched-for word, as the disaster in Asia continues to engage the attention of the world. Before the disaster, the word was little known, the more popular term for a large destructive wave being tidal wave. However, that term is considered incorrect by the scientific community, since tsunamis are nothing to do with tides, but are caused by underwater disturbances, such as earthquakes. Although, strictly speaking, tsunami is no more scientifically correct, as it is derived from the Japanese characters tsu, meaning 'harbour', and nami, meaning 'wave'.
