Top 20 words

Having studied languages, linguistics and computing, Dom Glennon now works as a systems developer for Cambridge Dictionaries. Each month, he calculates and comments on the top 20 most viewed entries on Cambridge Dictionaries Online.

The top 10 is again uncannily static - serendipity still stands head and shoulders above the competition with over 3000 searches, and just who are the 1078 people who search for fob? The only major change is liaise's surge into the top 10. A bad month for words beginning with I, as internet and infamous drop out, but a good month for words beginning with A, as they're replaced by analyse and affect.

1 serendipity (1) 11 fob (9)
2 idiom (2) 12 enquire (20)
3 paradigm (3) 13 effect (11)
4 jingoism (4) 14 advice (16)
5 foible (6) 15 analyse (-)
6 ubiquitous (5) 16 succumb (15)
7 dictionary (7) 17 sarcasm (17)
8 liaise (14) 18 perpetrate (18)
9 pragmatic (8) 19 surreal (13)
10 foray (10) 20 affect (-)

This list shows the 20 entries that were clicked on most frequently in February 2002. The figures in brackets show the word's position in last month's top 20.
