Top 20 words

Having studied languages, linguistics and computing, Dom Glennon now works as a systems developer for Cambridge Dictionaries. Each month, he calculates and comments on the top 20 most viewed entries on Cambridge Dictionaries Online.

Love is unmistakably in the air here at Cambridge Dictionaries Online, contributing to no fewer than four new entries in February's Top 20. The reason, obviously, is Valentine's Day, but a bit of clever detective work reveals that most love-related searches took place on the 11th and 12th of February, no doubt by love-struck young things searching for inspiration for what to write in their cards. So if you received a card bearing the romantic message 'Love me, love my dog', you now know who to blame.

Most popular of all the love searches is cupboard love, which is not, as you might imagine, harbouring unnatural feelings for furniture, but making a cynical display of love for someone in the hope of getting something from them. So nothing to do with Valentine's Day at all, then...

1 advice (1) 11 'Love me, love my dog' (-)
2 effect (2) 12 acquire (-)
3 cupboard love (-) 13 metaphor (7)
4 comply (8) 14 appreciate (11)
5 affect (4) 15 inform (12)
6 analyse (5) 16 love (-)
7 enquire (3) 17 assess (9)
8 liaise (10) 18 commit (18)
9 irony (6) 19 puppy love (-)
10 regard (15) 20 endeavour (-)

This list shows the 20 entries that were clicked on most frequently in February 2003. The figures in brackets show the word's position in last month's top 20.

Dom's wordsite of the month: I love you in different languages
No personal websites from cupboard-lovers, I'm afraid, but this continues the Top 20's theme very nicely: as the title suggests, how to say "I love you" in over 80 different languages.
