Top 20 words

Having studied languages, linguistics and computing, Dom Glennon now works as a systems developer for Cambridge Dictionaries. Each month, he calculates and comments on the top 20 most clicked-on entries on Cambridge Dictionaries Online.

With no major news stories exercising our users in May, it's back to the old favourites at the top: advice, effect, affect etc. There are some interesting pairings in this month's Top 20: provide information, commit to a relationship, respond to concern...I'm struggling here, as you can probably tell. So, here's an idea: why don't you write a short story/article/poem/whatever containing at least ten of this month's top 20 words, and send it to me? The best one will win a copy of the new Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary with its fantastic CD-ROM, as well as being featured in next month's Top 20. So what are you waiting for?

1 advice (3) 11 analyse (-)
2 effect (1) 12 liaise (16)
3 regard (4) 13 intend (-)
4 appreciate (6) 14 relate (-)
5 affect (5) 15 acquire (20)
6 assess (11) 16 use (-)
7 comply (7) 17 concern (-)
8 provide (8) 18 assume (-)
9 information (10) 19 paradigm (13)
10 commit (17) 20 respond (-)

This list shows the 20 entries that were clicked on most frequently in May 2003. The figures in brackets show the word's position in last month's top 20.

This may provide some inspiration: like those little magnets that you put on your fridge, move the words around to create Shakespearean poetry.
