The influence of current films on people's dictionary-searching habits (the title of my latest article which
The International Journal of Lexicography seem strangely reluctant to publish) is once again in evidence as perdition shoots straight in at no. 2, recording just one search less than
our perennial leader, serendipity. This also owes its popularity in part to a recent movie, but its sustained run at the top of the charts is probably more to do with the fact that it is,
apparently, the UK's favourite word.
