Top 20 words

Having studied languages, linguistics and computing, Dom Glennon now works as a systems developer for Cambridge Dictionaries. Each month, he calculates and comments on the top 20 most viewed entries on Cambridge Dictionaries Online.

We've made a few changes to the way the top 20 is calculated this month - searches from the top 20 itself are no longer counted, nor are bookmarked entries - and it shows: 9 new entries, and serendipity, having held the top spot for almost a year, drops to 9th place. enquire takes its place, and the top 10 seems to consist mainly of words of communication and analysis. In fact, the thoughtful mood of this month's top 20 is interrupted only by the charming gobsmacked, in for the first time at 13.

1 enquire (10) 11 provide (-)
2 effect (11) 12 liaise (4)
3 advice (8) 13 gobsmacked (-)
4 affect (17) 14 request (-)
5 regard (-) 15 idiom (3)
6 comply (16) 16 assess (19)
7 appreciate (20) 17 commit (-)
8 analyse (15) 18 pertain to (-)
9 serendipity (1) 19 interest (-)
10 inform (-) 20 allege (-)

This list shows the 20 entries that were clicked on most frequently in August 2002. The figures in brackets show the word's position in last month's top 20.
