Top 20 words

Having studied languages, linguistics and computing, Dom Glennon now works as a systems developer for Cambridge Dictionaries. Each month, he calculates and comments on the top 20 most viewed entries on Cambridge Dictionaries Online.

For the second month in a row, a new entry goes straight in at the no. 1 spot: recent events in Washington are clearly responsible for making sniper September's most searched-for word. Elsewhere, information is the highest climber, and it's a welcome return for paradigm, an old top 20 favourite. October was by some way our most successful month ever, with over 3 million searches logged.

1 sniper (-) 11 meek (-)
2 effect (5) 12 irony (13)

This list shows the 20 entries that were clicked on most frequently in October 2002. The figures in brackets show the word's position in last month's top 20.
