› HR instead of something:

You can take a lump sum in lieu of any unused vacation entitlement.
He was offered a cash bonus, or stock options in lieu.

› US LAW until an amount of money is paid to prove that a person charged with a crime will not try to leave the country:

in lieu of bail/bond He is being held in the City Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.
